London Reading Group ~ Visit to St George’s Bloomsbury
–
Join the London Reading Group on 24th April 2025 to celebrate the 210th anniversary of Anthony Trollope’s birth. The evening begins at 6.00pm at St George’s, Bloomsbury, with a tour of the church, including the font where Trollope was baptised, followed by wine, cake, and a seminar in the vestry room.
The Legacy of 1815
The discussion will focus on the legacy of 1815, the year of Trollope’s birth, a significant moment in British history and culture. This was the year of the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon’s final defeat, and the enactment of the Corn Laws, which profoundly influenced British agriculture and trade policy. Lord Liverpool was Prime Minister, steering the country through a time of change, and Jane Austen’s Emma was published, cementing her place in literary history.
We’ll reflect on how these historical and cultural events, alongside the early years of the Industrial Revolution, shaped Trollope’s world and the society captured in his novels. Join us to celebrate Trollope’s birth and explore the lasting impact of 1815.
