Underwood, Clarissa

The younger of Sir Thomas’ daughters, very gentle, sweet and fragile, who thought herself in love with Ralph, the heir. Despite rumors of his profligacy she refused to censure him, and it was not until he tried to marry Mary Bonner, and later Polly Neefit, that she acknowledged his instability. After some time she engaged herself to his brotherĀ Gregory, Rector of Newton Peele, who had loved her devotedly for years.
