Father of Patience and Clarissa, and for some time guardian of Ralph, the heir. After a short service in Parliament and as Solicitor General, he retired to his chambers in the Southampton Buildings, and devoted years to the preparation of a life of Francis Bacon – of which he never wrote a line.
