The Courtship Of Susan Bell

In Tales of All Countries [First Series], 1861. Originally published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, August 186o.

Susan Bell, younger daughter of a widowed boarding-house keeper at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was courted by Aaron Dunn, a rising young engineer. Susan’s dominating sister and her sanctimonious husband, the Rev. Phineas Beckard, professed to find Aaron unsuitable, as too worldly, but opposed the marriage unsuccessfully.

A dress rehearsal for the longer story Rachel Ray, the chief characters being the same weak mother, the fanatically religious older sister and, as heroine, the younger sister who knew what she wanted.
