Susan Bell, younger daughter of a widowed boarding-house keeper at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., was courted by Aaron Dunn, a rising young engineer. Susan’s dominating sister and her sanctimonious husband, the Rev. Phineas Beckard, professed to find Aaron unsuitable, as too worldly, but opposed the marriage unsuccessfully.
