The Way We Live Now ~ 150th Anniversary Dinner

Members of the Trollope Society are invited to join members of the Reform Club’s Thackeray Society in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Anthony Trollope’s The Way We Live Now. The Thackeray Society is the arts and culture society of the Reform Club and we are honoured that they have extended an invitation to members of the Trollope Society to the dinner in July.

Join us in the magnificent surroundings of The Library at the Reform Club at 7.00pm on Thursday 31st July 2025 for a reception with wine and canapés, followed by a two course dinner, coffee and petit fours.

The Way We Live Now was originally published in serialised form by Chapman and Hall, appearing in monthly parts from February 1874 to September 1875. In June 1875, it was released as a two-volume novel. Later that year, a one-volume edition was published in the United States by Harper & Brothers.

Professor Dinah Birch will speak about the novel’s enduring relevance and popularity. Professor Birch is a renowned Victorian literature scholar and has published widely on the work of Anthony Trollope and John Ruskin. She is the General Editor of the Oxford Companion to English Literature and has edited Trollope’s Can You Forgive Her? and The Small House at Allington for Oxford World’s Classics. She writes regularly for the TLS and the LRB, contributes to Sky Arts documentaries, and has served as a judge on the Booker Prize panel.
