Alliance of Literary Societies ~ Significant Others

The Alliance of Literary Societies is the umbrella organisation for literary societies and groups in the UK. On Wednesday 18th September the ALS is inviting all member organisations, including the Trollope Society, to join a Zoom meeting to discuss ‘Significant Others’, where you’ll discover the often-overlooked figures who shaped the lives and works of member societies’ authors.

Members of literary societies are invited to present brief, five-minute introductions to a significant person who played a crucial role in their Society’s author’s life—whether a mentor, partner, rival, or friend.

Anthony Trollope’s Significant Others

The most prominent  ‘significant other’ in the life of Anthony Trollope is his wife, Rose Heseltine, whom he married in 1844. Rose was a steadfast partner throughout Trollope’s life, providing him with emotional support and stability, which was crucial during his prolific writing career. Her influence was substantial, particularly in the domestic sphere, enabling Trollope to maintain the rigorous discipline required to produce his extensive body of work.

Another important figure who might be considered a ‘significant other’ in a broader sense is Kate Field, an American journalist, actress, and lecturer. Trollope and Field had a close and mutually respectful relationship. Field was a vibrant and independent woman who admired Trollope’s work and intellect. Although their relationship was not romantic, it was intellectually stimulating and affectionate. Their correspondence reveals a deep respect and friendship that was significant in both their lives.
