Edward Burne-Jones, George Eliot and Richard Wagner

The Thackeray Society is the arts and culture society of the Reform Club, and we are honoured that they have invited members of the Trollope Society to attend a talk by Barry Millington on ‘Edward Burne-Jones, George Eliot and Richard Wagner: A Collision of Like-minded Souls’, followed by a two course dinner. The event will take place at the Reform Club on Thursday 26th September at 7pm for 7.30pm.

In 1877 the composer Richard Wagner visited London with his wife Cosima, where they encountered the artist Edward Burne-Jones and the novelist George Eliot. They were all present at a small gathering in London in May 1877 when Wagner read his new poem, Parsifal.  Barry Millington’s talk will examine parallels and differences between Burne-Jones’ work and Wagner’s and his influence on Eliot and her partner George Lewes who were among his early admirers.

Barry Millington is a writer, lecturer and broadcaster specialising in Wagner. He is the founder/editor of The Wagner Journal and author of eight books on Wagner including The Wagner Compendium and Richard Wagner: The Sorcerer of Bayreuth.  He contributed the articles on Wagner to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and The New Grove Dictionary of Opera.  He is Chief Music Critic for the Evening Standard. He has also acted as dramaturgical adviser at opera houses internationally.
