In early life a stonemason in Barchester. who, to avenge the dishonor of his sister Mary, killed Henry Thorne and served a term of imprisomnent. Later he became a great contractor, made a fortune and was made a baronet. He loaned money to Mr. Gresham until he held mortgages on practically the whole estate, and took over Boxall Hill in part payment, erecting there a huge, expensive mansion. A ruthless man, a radical in all his thinking and a heavy drinker. He died of alcoholism, leaving his fortune to his worthless son, who soon followed him. Mary Thorne finally came into possession of the fortune.
