Melmotte, Marie

The illegitimate daughter of Augustus Melmotte, who was offered by her father to the highest bidder, socially speaking – he to furnish a dot sufficient to make the match desirable. Various impoverished noblemen entered the lists, but she selected the most worthless of them all, Sir Felix Carbury. After she had stolen money from her father for their elopement, Sir Felix gambled it away. After her father’s death she married the adventurer Hamilton Fisker and went with him to America.

"She was not beautiful, she was not clever, and she was not a saint.... She was a little thing, hardly over twenty years of age"
