It is suggested that the three boys were named for contemporary bishops: Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London; Henry Phillpons, Bishop of Exeter; and Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, who was disrespectfully known as “Soapy Sam.”
