An attorney in Cambridge, who, realizing the abnormal home life of Hester with her half-crazed mother, advised her marriage to John Caldigate. Later, when John was accused of bigamy, he bitterly denounced him and attempted to remove his sister from her husband’s home. Both he and his wife Margaret are important characters in John Caldigate.
