A widower with nine children and no money, who felt cheated when the fortune he expected to inherit was left to his uncles. When Margaret Mackenzie fell heir to the money, he was persuaded by his domineering mother to ask her to marry him. He did so in a halfhearted way, but finally found himself in love with her. He was greatly depressed at her refusal, but after it was learned that he was the true heir, he persuaded her to marry him.
