Christmas with the Trollope Society

This Christmas, the Trollope Society is delighted to offer a full programme of festive activities for readers to enjoy. We will once again bring members together for seasonal readings, friendly gatherings, and opportunities to explore Trollope’s work. Highlights this year include our BIG READ of Christmas at Thompson Hall, our lively Christmas Quiz to round off the year, and a special offer on the Trollope & Millais Christmas cards, notelets and postcards.

Whether you are joining us for a discussion, stocking up on cards, or taking part in a light-hearted competition, we hope these events bring warmth and cheer throughout the season.

Alliance of Literary Societies Christmas Cracker 3

On Tuesday 16 December, the Alliance of Literary Societies hosts this year’s Christmas Cracker, a free online meeting on Zoom, open to all members of the Trollope Society. This annual gathering brings together readers from literary societies across the UK for a light-hearted and imaginative festive celebration. The theme this year is: ‘What would your favourite author put in their Christmas crackers?’

Participants are invited to give a short three-minute contribution imagining the seasonal trinkets their author might include. For Trollope, this might mean a miniature bottle of Martha Dunstable’s Ointment of Lebanon, or a tiny hunting horn from Barsetshire, along with other suitably Trollopian treasures.

Christmas at Thompson Hall ~ BIG READ

On Monday 22 December, we invite members to join the concluding BIG READ of the year and come together to discuss Trollope’s much-loved seasonal tale Christmas at Thompson Hall. The story’s blend of farce, misunderstanding, and Christmas atmosphere has long made it a favourite among readers. This relaxed evening session offers a chance to enjoy Trollope’s humour at its most festive, and to take part in a friendly conversation with fellow enthusiasts.

The Trollope Society Christmas Quiz

Our Christmas Quiz returns on Tuesday 30 December at 6.00pm, offering a relaxed way to enjoy the festive season with fellow readers. The quiz open to everyone, regardless of how much Trollope you have read. Entry is free, though we do ask for a donation if you are able to support the Society’s work.

Participants will be allocated to a team by the Quizmaster, or you can request to join a friends and family team if you would like to play together. If you would prefer to take part without the pressure of competing, you are welcome to stay in the Quizmaster’s team, which does not compete.

Expect light-hearted rounds on Trollope, Victorian life, Christmas traditions, and a few surprises along the way. Although there are no prizes, the winning team will enjoy the accolade of finishing at the top of the leaderboard, and the satisfaction that brings. It promises to be a warm and enjoyable evening.

Support the Trollope Society

While all of our online events are free, we encourage participants to make a donation to support the important work of the Trollope Society. Your contribution helps us to promote Trollope’s works and engage with a global audience of readers.
