Recommended reading in advance of the visit to Brussels and Bruges

  • The Noble Jilt – Trollope’s play, set in Bruges, which introduces the central ideas and dilemmas later developed in
  • Can You Forgive Her? – the novel that expands on the themes first explored in The Noble Jilt.
  • Phineas Finn, Chapter 38 – features the duel between Phineas Finn and Lord Chiltern, set on Blankenberge sands, which we will visit.
  • La Vendée, Chapter 3 – describes the chateau at Durbellière, taken to be a description of the Trollope family’s house in Bruges. We will read this excerpt together during our visit to the house.
  • Letter from George Bartley, June 1851 – gives his opinion on Trollope’s The Noble Jilt.
  • The Eustace Diamonds (1872) – contains a description of the play The Noble Jilt, which Mrs Carbuncle, Lucinda Roanoke, and Lizzie Eustace went to see on the night of the theft of the diamonds.

Volunteer for a reading or to lead our discussion of The Noble Jilt and Can You Forgive Her?

We are looking for volunteers for the following during our visit:

  • Sunday 31 August – When we visit the Trollope family’s house in Bruges, read the description of the chateau at Durbellière from La Vendée, Chapter 3, and lead the discussion of The Noble Jilt and Can You Forgive Her?.
  • Monday 1 September – When we visit Blankenberge sands, read the description from Phineas Finn, Chapter 38.
