Mrs. General Talboys

In Tales of All Countries, Second Series, 1863. Originally published in The London Review, Feb. 2, 1861.

The wife of an English general spending the winter in Rome became the center of a literary-artistic and somewhat unconventional coterie. Charles O’Brien, an impressionable young Irish sculptor, made the mistake of assuming that her freedom from prejudice authorized him to make love to her, and was severely snubbed.
