Working on French biologist Louis Pasteur’s germ theory, Joseph Lister used carbolic acid as an antiseptic barrier on patients, reducing mortality on a male accident ward from 45% to 15%. Despite initial scepticism, Lister’s methods were refined and then widely adopted. He is regarded as the founder of modern surgical practice.
