A classmate of George Bertram at Oxford, who succeeded his father as Vicar of Hurst Staple with the stipulation that he accept a curate’s income and turn over the rest of his salary to his mother. This precluded any hope of his marriage to Adela Gauntlet, and the story of their difficulties forms one of the subplots of The Bertrams.
