A tailor in the town of Keswick, somewhat of a freethinker, who, because of his belief in the justice of the Countess Lovel’s claim to her title, spent on her his entire fortune. When his son and Lady Anna fell in love, the Countess promptly forgot all his past kindnesses and forbade the marriage. Embittered, he died leaving his son only the accounts showing the debt due him from the Countess.
