The young surgeon of Barchester who brought suit for an accounting of the revenues of Hiram’s Hospital, and was called an “impious demagogue” by Dr. Grantly. His love for Eleanor Harding, whose father, the Warden, resigned his position because of the publicity attending the suit, led him to withdraw it. He and Eleanor were married, but he died soon after.
