North West Reading Group ~ The Age of Innocence

–

The North West Reading Group will be meeting to discuss The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton (set in the 1870’s, published in 1920), on Thursday 3rd June 2027 at 2.00pm. The venue is the Royal Exchange Theatre, St Ann’s Square, Manchester M2 7DH.

In our 2026/27 meetings, we will explore two additional writers whose work engages with many of the same themes found in Trollope’s novels: Margaret Oliphant and Edith Wharton.

Wharton’s novels, in particular, share notable affinities with Trollope’s work. There are clear parallels between Trollope’s The Way We Live Now and Wharton’s The Age of Innocence, particularly in their sharp social observation, subtle irony, and exploration of how wealth, status and social expectations shape personal relationships. Oliphant and Wharton offer different perspectives on themes central to Trollope’s fiction, while bringing their own distinctive insights to them.
