London Seminar Group – The Map of Barsetshire

Michael Williamson will be talking about the challenges faced in creating a new Trollope Society map of Barsetshire.

The sketch map that Anthony claimed to have created remained lost for many years and some doubted that it had ever existed. Before it was eventually discovered among family papers, other versions of the County had appeared and, following its discovery, there were several more attempts.

All of these versions, painstaking though several of them were, faced the over-riding problem that a) there are several anomalies in the sketch map b) Trollope himself did not remain true to his original conception and c) where specific distances are recorded these do not always conform with previous information given. One might conclude that no definitive map of Barset could ever be created but the Trollope Society, of course, were not likely to be deterred by such apparently insuperable problems!

Trollope Society Seminar Groups

Seminar groups are run by the Trollope Society. Seminar groups are a great way to read Trollope. With so many novels to choose from they provide an excellent reason to read the lesser well known works, as well as to reread the favourites! Each seminar is led by one of the members of the group, and everyone’s participation is welcomed. They are a friendly and relaxed way to enjoy Trollope, share your thoughts as well as find out more from other enthusiasts.

Non-members of the Society are very welcome to come to a seminar. If they enjoy it and want to come to this or other events in future please ask afterwards for details of membership.

Price £12 to be collected on the day.
