Anthony Trollope: The Belgium Connection

Frederik Van Dam, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Research Foundation Flanders and KU Leuven will give the 29th Annual Lecture on Anthony Trollope: the Belgian Connection. Frederik’s enthusiasm concerning all things Trollopian can be demonstrated by the fact that he recently became a father for the first name and named his son, Phineas.

Trollope’s connection with Belgium had a significant impact on his life and his writing. In 1834 Anthony’s father, Thomas Trollope, fled to Belgium to avoid being arrested for debt. The whole family moved to Bruges, where they were entirely dependent on Fanny’s earnings as a writer. Thomas’ health failed and a year later he died, so too did Anthony’s siblings, Henry and Emily, of consumption. At the age of 19 Trollope returned to London to take up a position as a civil servant in the Post Office.
