A young Southerner, educated at West Point, who became a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. During a skirmish in the Blue Ridge he captured his wounded brother Tom, a general in the Confederate Army, sent him back to a hospital in Alexandria and eventually arranged to have him invalided home.
