A bankrupt and bed-ridden merchant of Prague, who was for a time a partner of the Jew Stephen Trendellsohn. The children of the two partners fell in love, and met opposition from both families. Josef was at first heartbroken at the thought of the marriage, but before his death became reconciled to it.
